Downtown Des Moines Indoor Studio Sessions
If there’s one thing we’ve learned about life in 2020, it’s that things can be incredibly unpredictable, and totally unexpected.
I mean, who expected a Snow Squall Warning in October?
I didn’t have any photo sessions scheduled the day of the Snow Squall, but I can’t count how many times I’ve had to reschedule photo sessions due to weather. Usually, it’s been for wind. You can’t just fix windblown hair in Photoshop. Fix a few stray hairs? Sure. But a total windblown mess? No. Doesn’t work.
As much as I love photographing outdoors on location, especially this time of year with the beautiful fall colors, it just isn’t always feasible, especially with autumn in Iowa. You can have a beautiful sunny day in the 70’s with little to no wind, or freezing temps with wind gusts of 30mph.
A few years ago I started looking around for indoor options for photography sessions. Most of what I found were traditional studio spaces with backdrops, and while I appreciate that type of photography and do that type of work for business head shots, it’s not the style I’m trying to achieve for the majority of my work for families, babies, or high school seniors. So, finding an indoor location option has been on my radar for awhile but not something I seriously started pursuing until this year.
I had visited The Studio at One Source Events a few years ago when they first opened their location in downtown Des Moines, and was immediately drawn to the uniqueness of the space. With more of an industrial vibe, the space boasts exposed beams and brick wall, and hardwood floors in the upper loft space, with large windows for gorgeous natural light flooding the space. And, for those wanting a more traditional studio look, the space offers backdrops available on site or you can bring your own.
I knew I wanted to photograph here and have this as an option to offer my clients especially when the weather isn’t ideal for an outdoor session.
I was thrilled when Molly’s family agreed to come to the studio for a model/portfolio building session with me! We had planned to do an in-home lifestyle newborn session this spring when their youngest son was born, but with all of the new Covid restrictions we had to put that on hold. So, when it was time to do a portfolio session in this studio space, Molly was one of the first people I called. I’m so glad they said yes!
With various furniture pieces and backgrounds available for use, we were able to achievable a variety of looks in a fairly short amount of time.
Oh my goodness, could these boys be any cuter?
This red velvet couch is a great set up for your 2020 Christmas card. Add a Christmas tree next to it and perfection! I might just do that for my remaining 2020 sessions 😜
I love the negative space that this neutral gray wall provides for the ultimate simplicity, keeping the focus on your family’s connection with one another.
With large windows, this studio space offers incredible natural light that floods the room and makes it the perfect space for your indoor family photo session. No wind, no rain or snow, no worries!
It’s not often that mom and dad get photos taken of just the two of them, especially with young children. Thankfully a family friend was able to hold the baby and keep big brother occupied while I took a minute to photograph mom and dad alone.
Wall design service is free with every photo session. You never need to wonder how your photos will look hanging in your home. I love to show you the possibilities!
I’m thrilled to be able to photograph at this beautiful space year round, so if you still need to schedule your family photo session don’t let the cold weather stop you. Contact me today and let’s create something truly unique and beautiful for your home.
