Des Moines Go Red for Women 2019
Last week I had the honor and privilege of photographing this year’s American Heart Association Des Moines Go Red for Women Dinner at the Ron Pearson Center - HyVee. I had already donated a photography session with print credit to the Silent Auction portion of the event, and when they needed a photographer to cover the actual event I was thrilled that they reached out to me!
Mother. Sister. Friend.
The statistics are staggering. According to goredforwomen.org, “Cardiovascular disease is the number 1 killer of women, causing 1 in 3 deaths each year. That’s approximately one woman every minute!”
The Fight Against Heart Disease
In case you aren’t familiar with Go Red for Women, it’s a campaign of the American Heart Association to raise awareness among women about their risks for cardiovascular disease, and help them reduce those risks and live a healthier lifestyle.
As a former ICU nurse having cared for hundreds of patients with cardiovascular disease, this cause is very near and dear to me. I’ve seen first hand the devastating effects of heart disease.
I’ve seen courageous survivors too, including my father-in-law who suffered a heart attack several years ago.
To be able to capture this years Go Red for Women dinner in West Des Moines was truly an honor. Having never attended before I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was an incredible night of encouragement, empowerment, and inspiration.
The evening started with a cocktail hour where guests, all dressed in red and looking beyond FABULOUS I might add, could browse the Silent Auction displays and get a selfie with their besties.
KCCI’s Alyx Sacks was emcee for the evening and really made the event a lot of fun!
After the cocktail hour guests moved in to the conference center for an incredible dinner and guest speakers sharing their inspiring stories of survival.
There was also a fun Live Auction during the dinner with all proceeds benefitting the efforts of the American Heart Association.
